The PhD Grand Challenges Interdisciplinary Scheme, PITCH will bring together a cohort of approximately 140 high performing HDR students across the Monash campus network together with senior Monash mentors. HDR students will be selected from both STEM/HASS fields; students will be nominated by their Faculty/Institute/Campus.
The 2025 PITCH program will occur at the Monash Indonesia campus from 20 - 24 October, 2025.
The students will work together in interdisciplinary cohort teams on Monash Impact 2030 Grand Challenges that address and engage with local needs and objectives. Each cohort will participate in professional development and present programs of work. Their project work will be supported by senior research mentors from across the Monash campus network with excellent supervision records.
The successful applicants who need to travel to Indonesia will be provided with a travel/accommodation bursary of AUD $2000. The event is fully catered and a number of dinners are provided as part of the program. The funding will be transferred to the successful applicants directly in the form of reimbursement after a successful Study Away Application. All travel and visa arrangements must be managed by applicants.
Eligibility and Process:
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled as a doctoral candidate at Monash University in any of its campuses.
- At time of application, have successfully completed the confirmation of candidature milestone, but not yet presented for the Final Review milestone (for doctoral candidates).
- Have study away entitlement remaining (successful applicants will need to formally apply for study away with MGRO prior to making travel arrangements).
- Have the support of their Main Supervisor.

Applications will be initially reviewed by all ADGRs or Institute Graduate Research Director and then nominated for consideration by the PITCH Academic leads.
Applications will be assessed against the following key criteria:
- Academic merit of the applicant and their progress to date
- Quality of the applicant’s statement about the connection of their work to the Monash Grand Challenges
- Quality of the applicant’s statements about the value of interdisciplinary research and collaboration
- Strength of supervisor support
